Bluesfest could hit the road

BLUESFEST will move interstate if the Byron Shire Council cannot give the festival a 10-year commitment, the event director said.

Byron Bay Bluesfest director Peter Noble has asked the council for the long-term commitment to allow it to operate annually at the Tyagarah site.

The amendment to the current development application will come before the council today.

Mr Noble said he expects the matter will be deferred while further information is collected from the Roads and Traffic Authority.

He said the council needed to step up and make a decision.

“The council needs to give us an answer and if they can’t then we will move on,” he said.

“It will be with great regret though, as I have always tried to do things on a local level. The time has come for them to make a decision.”

Splendour in the Grass moved to Woodford, Queensland, this year after event organisers failed to gain approval to operate at the North Byron Shire Parklands site.

Mr Noble said Bluesfest may also move to Woodford if the application for a long-term commitment is denied.

“We will be a festival in exile in Woodford while we wait for the State Government to intervene,” he said.

“Its time for us to make a long-term decision because it is an expensive investment. We need security of tenure.”
