Blowing out birthday candles may be banned for being 'risky'

OLD-fashioned birthday cakes could be off the menu with health guidelines suggesting blowing out candles was too risky in childcare centres.

Federal Health Minister Tanya Plibersek said while there would be no "cake police" roving childcare centres, a new national guide to children's health suggested having cupcakes at birthdays so other kids could avoid someone blowing on their food.

Ms Plibersek dismissed any suggestions the Staying Healthy manual was a sign of a nanny-state having mad.

The Health Minister - joined by Minister for Child Care Kate Ellisa - said the guide was about giving practical ideas to childcare centres and groups to help prevent kids picking up viruses when together.

"There's a degree of common sense that has to be applied when interpreting any of these things," she said.

"We're not going to have the cupcake police out but childcare centres know whatever they can do to reduce infections in childcare centres is going to be good for the kids, it's going to be good for the families that they support, and it's going to be good for childcare workers themselves."

The guide includes suggestions on how to change nappies without spreading germs, how to best wash hands, how to use an alcohol-based rub and how hands can spread infection.

The NHMRC will also conduct public consultation about the new guidelines.
