Birds of Tokyo at free gig

FRESH off the plane from Sydney, Birds of Tokyo are more likely to get a glimpse of the big prawn, not the ‘big lobster' they'd expected.

Birds of Tokyo land on stage for a free, all ages gig in Ballina tonight thanks to Optus Sound Scriber, Max Quinn.

Talking to Birds of Tokyo drummer Adam Weston on the eve of the gig, the impending weather is causing some concern of cancellation within the community.

Weston is quick to dispel the rumours, however, saying the ‘hanger-like' stage means he isn't too concerned about the weather.

“Unless it's really windy, like blowing a gale and all our equipment's getting wet, we should be fine,” Weston said.

“I dare say it's going to be all the punters who will get very wet.”

After three months of blogging, Southern Cross University journalism student Max Quinn came in the top three in the competition, winning the free gig for Ballina.

Birds of Tokyo have had a massive year which saw them nominated for six ARIA awards off the back of their third, self-titled album.

They took home the publicly-voted best rock album award on the night and days later their album surpassed platinum sales.

While the band thinks they may have passed through Ballina before, they're looking forward to stopping off for the first of the three free regional gigs.

“Being the first of the free gigs, I'd say it will be a solid upbeat set,” Weston said.

“I imagine the vibe will be pretty good, especially being the first cab off the rank.”

Birds of Tokyo play at the Ballina Seagulls League Club tonight in a free, all ages, ticketed event. Tickets were given away through various outlets, including Triple Z FM, SCU and 100 lucky Northern Star readers also won double passes to the event.

Organisers expect 1000 punters at the event tonight. If you don't already have a ticket you will not be allowed entry.
