WAITING 242 hours to lay his hands on the first bottle of Bundaberg Five white rum to be released to the public was more than worth it for Craig Monsma.
And it sure beat standing in the line of more than 700 people at the launch yesterday.
Mr Monsma scored his prized bottle after camping at the Bundaberg Rum Bondstore for the past 10 days.
“If you're passionate about something, you'll always be here,” he said.
The day also coincided with another very special occasion.
“It's my daughter's birthday – she turns four,” he said.
“I'll give her that bottle when she is old enough.”
Bondstore manager Duncan Littler said the launch was the biggest event ever to be held at the distillery.
“I got here at 6am and we had a line-up we would usually have at 10am,” he said.
“I'm very impressed with the turnout.”
The waiting line did not deter the spirits of 24-year-old Sarah Friis, who came armed with a stool and book to kill the time.
“It's rum – why wouldn't you want to wait?” she said.
Mr Littler described the new rum as clear, with a crisp taste that was “very versatile and good for mixing”.
“People aren't used to making cocktails with Bundy,” he said.
Bundaberg Rum marketing manager Matt Bruhn said the concept of Bundaberg Five had been in the pipeline for more than five years, the same time Bundaberg Red was created.
“We let Bundaberg Red into the market and started up again on Bundaberg white,” Mr Bruhn said.
