Big fire but little damage at the Lismore tip
UPDATE 1pm: A FIRE at the Lismore Waste Facility on Tuesday night started in a pile of scrap metal and was quickly contained by members of the Wyrallah RFS and Lismore Fire and Rescue.
Lismore station officer Aaron Rampling said the cause of the fire was unknown but the quick response of firies stopped it spreading to any of the structures in the surrounding area.
Mr Rampling said they used about 400 litres of foam to extinguish the fire and there were some LPG cylinders that needed to be cooled to a safe temperature.
NOVEMBER 19: A LARGE fire broke out in the metal recycling compound at Lismore City Council's Whyrallah Road tip this evening.
Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell confirmed on Facebook the location of the fire within the tip shortly after 8.30pm, saying, at that point, nine fire crews were on-site to battle the blaze.
Cr Dowell said she had not yet heard what the cause of the fire might be, but said animals at the council's nearby pound facility were safe.
Video footage of the fire recorded by Lismore resident Craig Greaves shows an inferno at the tip, with flames roaring high into the air and sending an enormous black cloud of smoke billowing into the air.
