BEEF will meet the reef at Evans Head this year with the town hosting an event as part of Casino Beef Week.
The event will focus on kids, with up to 350 local school kids expected to take part.
Ironically however, the kids will feast on free fish burgers for lunch.
“Being near the sea we are going to serve fish,” grocery manager at IGA Evans Head supermarket and co-organiser of the event, Shane Todd, said.
Despite the fish lunch there will be definite rural feel to the day with the car park of the IGA supermarket to be turned into a farm yard, complete with fencing, hay bales, a tractor and cattle.
“Each child will be given a sample bag with a heap of goodies in it,” Mr Todd said.
“We wanted to get involved with Evans Head because it is part of the Richmond Valley,” Beef Week president Stuart George told The Northern Star.
“We are starting small, but we will certainly look at making this an annual event as part of Beef Week, and make it bigger each year.
“Evans Head IGA came up with the idea so we all got together and took it from there – it has come together quite nicely,” he said.
Mr Todd said IGA had been looking to host an event as part of Beef Week for some time.
“The event is a great opportunity to bring the shire together, and particularly Evans Head and Casino because the towns are so closely linked,” he said.
Other attractions on the day include free local coffee, and visits from the Arnott's Tiny Teddies and the Cadbury Freddo Frog.
Casino Beef Week starts on Saturday, May 21, with the official opening at the Casino RSM Club, and runs through until May 31.
Where Beef Meets the Reef is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25, at 11am at the IGA supermarket in Woodburn Street, Evans Head.
