Erosion hammers Byron Shire beaches

ROUGH weather, king tides and this week's super moon have taken a heavy toll on Byron Shire's beaches, carving huge chunks from the sand.

The erosion is so bad Byron Shire Council has had to suspend beach access for people with a disability permit because of safety and environmental concerns stemming from the damage.

The permits allow people with a disability to take vehicles onto beaches.

The council said the suspension would be temporary.

Apart from the coastal erosion, the king tide had also left debris on the beaches. As a result, people with a disability permit could not take their motor vehicles on to the beaches for the time being.
