BALLET Epyptienne will be one of the pieces performed at Byron Ballet's gala night.

The piece is a ballet inspired by Egyptian sacred art and choreographed by Hassan Sheta.

"The dancers have loved learning Ballet Egyptienne and are really looking forward to meeting Hassan when he arrives at Byron Bay next week, though they are also a little nervous about it," Byron Ballet director Yvonne Hall said.

"I performed in Ballet Egyptienne myself 30 years ago with Hassan, so it is a ballet very close to my heart."

Mr Sheta trained at the Cairo Ballet School before being granted a full scholarship to train in Moscow.

He became a principal dancer of the Cairo Ballet Company and represented Egypt at international classical ballet competitions.

After dancing with Frankfurt Ballet in the 1970s and the Sydney Dance Company in the '80s, he focused on teaching and choreography.

The Byron Ballet Gala will be held at the Byron Theatre on Friday, October 31.

Excerpts will also be performed from Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Paquita, La Bayadere and Stars and Stripes.
