Baby's skull broken during c-section at Qld hospital

Bev Lacey

A BABY died in a Brisbane hospital after a nurse broke his skull during a caesarean birth, with a coronial inquest now set to explore the incident.

Nixon Tonkin died shortly after being born at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in June 2014.

He arrived at 38 weeks' gestation but never took a breath on his own.

Deputy state coroner John Lock will this week consider how the baby boy's skull was fractured during the cesarean as a nurse attempted to free him.

News Corp is reporting that such catastrophic injuries arising from the manoeuvre were rare, according to statements made to the Brisbane Coroner's Court.

In a statement, Nixon's family said they were thankful for an investigation into what happened.

"We hope that the inquest will reveal what could have been done to help prevent Nixon's death and make recommendations to prevent future tragedies of this sort," they wrote in a statement.
