Australian punter joins NFL's Dallas Cowboys

THE Australian contingent in the NFL is up to seven players with former Arkansas Razorbacks punter Sam Irwin-Hill signing with the Dallas Cowboys just one day before the 2017 NFL Draft.

Irwin-Hill's management announced the news via social media on Thursday morning, with the Bendigo native in place to provide training camp competition to incumbent Cowboys punter Chris Jones.

While Jones has shown improvement in recent years after competition with another Australian Tom Hornsey in preseason, the six-year veteran is entering the final year of his contract in Dallas.

Irwin-Hill could provide Jerry Jones with a younger, cheaper option if not this season, then in 2018. The Victorian shares a common background with the famous Cowboys owner who also played college football with the Razorbacks.

Standing at six-foot-three and 94kg, Irwin-Hill, 26, averaged 42.0 yards per punt in college and spent time in camp with the Indianapolis Colts after going undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft.

The Cowboys have history with bringing on Australian punters.

In addition to Hornsey and Irwin-Hill, in past years they've also had Pro-Bowler Mat McBriar and Colin Ridgway donning the silver and blue.
