Australian kicker re-signs with Giants
AMERICAN FOOTBALL: Australian punter Brad Wing has signed a contract extension to remain with NFL franchise the New York Giants until at least 2019.
The 25-year-old originally from Melbourne was traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers last season and replaced Super Bowl-winning kicker Steve Weatherford.
The three-year deal is believed to be worth $A8.56 million.
Wing was part of history last year when one of his punts was returned by then 49er Jarryd Hayne. It was the first time a punt had been kicked and returned by Australians.
Wing placed 33 punts inside the 20-yard line, which tied the Giants’ single-season record set by Brad Maynard (1997-98).
In 2015, Wing had a 38.9-yard net average on 76 punts. He placed 33 punts inside the 20, tying a team record, with 10 touchbacks, and his longest kick travelled 64 yards.
The Australian kicker played at LSU and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent in 2013, but was cut in training camp and moved to the Steelers in 2014.
