Australian Fed Cup team play Brisbane this weekend

YOU wouldn't think the Australian Fed Cup team was out to break a 40-year drought in the international tournament, to be played in Brisbane this weekend.

The Aussies, led by team captain Alicia Molik, were all smiles and traded plenty of jokes at the Queensland Tennis Centre today - ahead of their looming clash against the much-more serious Germans.

It will be Australia's first appearance in the semi-finals since 1993.

And they will face a mighty German team, featuring world No.7 Angelique Kerber, recently-crowned WTA Charleston champion and ex-top 10 player Andrea Petkovic.

Then there is the dangerous doubles pairing of Julia Goerges and Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

But the Aussie team - Samantha Stosur, Casey Dellacqua, Ashleigh Barty and Storm Sanders, provided the press with plenty of light-hearted gibes - aimed at each other - earlier today.

Ipswich's young star Ashleigh Barty, 17, mentioned she couldn't remember Australia's 1993 campaign … because she was not born then.

"She always likes to bring that up," quipped her doubles partner Dellacqua, 29, highlighting the age difference between the two, as well as the team harmony that exists within the group.

Dellacqua and Barty is Australia's dream doubles pair, making three grand-slam finals last year.

Meanwhile, Germany's press conference earlier in the day was a much more serious affair, with some stone-cold faces and responses to questions raised by reporters.
