‘Talking too much’: Chappell tells Paine to cut the sledging

FORMER Australia captain Ian Chappell has called on Tim Paine to tone down the sledging in the Border-Gavaskar Series.

Paine has been heard several times on stump mic this series engaging in verbal battles with the touring Indians, and in particular captain Virat Kohli and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.

While nothing the Australian captain has said could be considered too offensive, Chappell believes Paine would benefit from a quieter approach.

"You've got enough to think about as captain, you don't need to be talking too much", Chappell said.

"I'm not a great believer in talking helping the team's cause very much.

"I'd prefer to have guys in the field thinking about how to get a wicket rather than shooting their mouth off."

In the second Test at Perth, Paine was heard saying to India opener Murali Vijay "I know he's (Kohli) your captain but you can't seriously like him as a bloke".

And at the MCG he had some colourful suggestions for how Pant could fill his spare time next month, given MS Dhoni will be back behind the stumps for India in the one-day international series.

"Tell you what, big MS (Dhoni) is back in the one-day squad too, we might get him down to the (Hobart) Hurricanes this bloke, we need a batter," Paine said while Pant was at the crease.

"Fancy that Pant, extend your little Aussie holiday. Beautiful town Hobart too. Get you a nice apartment on the water front.

"Have him over for dinner. Can you babysit? (Can I) take the wife to the movies one night, you can look after the kids?"

Pant returned serve on Saturday at the MCG.

"Have you heard of a temporary captain ever?", Pant said when Paine came out to bat.

"He loves to talk. That's the only thing he can do boy. Only talking, talking."
