Australia drops to 50th for internet speed

THE National Broadband Network was meant to mean big things for Australia, and at $49 billion, it had a hefty price tag to match.

However, cost blowouts and delays have turned it into a political football.

That's not the important bit, though.

A new graphic, from Bloomberg, shows Australia has slumped to 50th place on a global list of internet speeds.

While it's not surprising South Korea tops the list, with a string of Scandinavian countries also doing well, we're behind Kenya - a developing East African country - and even Russia, which is sitting in 44th place.

"We are really an example of how not to do it," Paul Budde, a Sydney-based former adviser to the United Nations on digital development, told Fairfax.

"We have ended up with the worst possible solution."
