Aussies cashing in with gold at World Cup event

AUSSIES have won two gold medals at the inaugural ISAF Sailing World Cup Final off Abu Dhabi.

World and European 470 class champions Mat Belcher and Will Ryan (pictured) didn't have everything their own way, but five top-three finishes in the seven races was enough to give them victory against a field that included six of the top seven boats in the world.

Each of the 10 Olympic classes on the program had just 20 contestants - all by invitation - with each of the winners pocketing $A11,850.

"This event is a concept all of us professional sailors have been hoping for in the Olympic scene, and it does give that chance for us to be professional," Belcher said.

Australia's other winner was Tom Burton who dominated the laser class, winning three of the seven races with two other placings .

Burton has won two other World Cup events in 2014 to stamp himself as a genuine gold medal contender at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
