Aussie Mills Spurs Antonio to playoff win

BASKETBALL: Aussie Patty Mills poured in five three-pointers on his way to 20 points as the San Antonio Spurs took a 3-2 NBA playoff series lead over the Houston Rockets.

Mills, starting for the injured Tony Parker, was in everything for the Spurs, matched his career playoff scoring high and played 43 minutes in the 110-107 overtime thriller.

The win puts the Spurs on the brink of the Western Conference finals - and a date with the Golden State Warriors.

Mills was important late in the game and in OT, draining a clutch three-pointer with just over two minutes on the clock that kept the Spurs in the game.

With scores tied at 101, Mills banked in a three on the last play of regulation that would have won it, had it not been a second too late.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovic launched an almighty spray on big man Pau Gasol for the broken play as he got caught up in the lane with Clint Capela, leaving Mills with little chance.

It took three minutes of overtime for the first bucket, Harden finding Beverley for a corner three that gave the MVP candidate his triple-double (33 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists).

Danny Green then drained a three with 56.5 to go to make it 106-104, then Ryan Anderson answered with 47.6 left, before it was Green again, his finish in the lane put the Spurs in front for good.

Mills' defence on Eric Gordon late forced the pair into a jump ball scenario, which the Rocket won, but Manu Ginobili rejected Harden's attempted three at the buzzer that would have tied the scores.

The series returns to Houston for Game 6 on Friday (AEST).
