Aussie makes impressive start to NFL season

AUSTRALIAN NFL beast Adam Gotsis has earned rave reviews on opening weekend, as the defensive monster enjoyed a breakout game in the Denver Broncos' dramatic 24-21 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Gotsis performed admirably throughout pre-season, stepping into a starting role to cover the injury crisis in the Broncos' defensive line.

But he stepped it up another notch on Tuesday as he took the biggest steps forward in his NFL career.

Things didn't go to plan to begin with, with rookie Broncos head coach Vance Joseph abandoning the pre-game plan to start the 24-year-old Australian in place of injured starter Jared Crick.

Instead, Shelby Harris was handed the start - a worrying early sign for former second-round pick Gotsis.

It didn't take long for the Australian to make an impact, however.

And by halftime he'd lit up social media after pulling off a series of impact plays, stopping the Chargers' run game with three tackles on nine first-half defensive run snaps.

And they were impressive too, breaking double teams to get his hands on the runner and tackling for loss.

Gotsis also caught the attention of former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan, who was in his commentary debut with ESPN.

Ryan was impressed by the big defensive stops and singled Gotsis out for praise saying if not for injury, "he would've been a first or second-round pick".

While Ryan was correct in recalling that Gotsis had picked up a knee injury in college, he may want to have another look at the 2016 draft, where Gotsis was picked up by the Broncos ... in the second round.
