Heartthrob back home for new film

AUSSIE heartthrob Ryan Kwanten is back on Australian soil promoting his new film Red Hill.

The 34-year-old is glad to be back home and happy not to have to put on an American accent for his role.

He has come a long way since his days manning the beach of Summer Bay as lifeguard Vinnie Patterson on Home and Away.

Kwanten has been away for eight years and is currently starring in the hit vampire series, True Blood in the US.

He has positioned himself as one of Hollywood's most promising talents and as an internationally recognised actor.

Kwanten has appeared in popular US television shows Summerland and Law & Order: SVU and starred in films such as Don't Fade Away, Flicka, American Brown and Dead Silence.

Kwanten said he had no acting experience before Home and Away and was grateful they gave him a shot.

Although Kwanten won the hearts of Australians with his role as the athletic, tanned and sweet Vinnie he will well and truly melt those hearts as Shane Cooper in the beautiful but tragic action thriller Red Hill.

Kwanten plays a young police officer who relocates to the small country town of Red Hill with his pregnant wife Alice (Claire van der Boom).

But when news of a prison break sends the local enforcement officers into panic, Cooper's (Kwanten) first day of duty turns into a nightmare of revenge and redemption.

He said he did not get much time to prepare for the role.

“I went from the heat of Louisiana to the cold in Victoria,” Kwanten said.

“It was trial by fire.

“Imagine four weeks of unadulterated adrenaline.”

What Kwanten lacks in professional acting training he more than makes up for in life experience.

“I've lived a very adventurous life,” he said.

“I've has my share of trials and tribulations.

“Life was my acting training.”

Kwanten will go back to the US this month to film the new season of True Blood, but he will return soon to film another movie and he hopes to move back to Australia in a few years.

He said “Red Hill is a beautiful journey, loaded with action and a bit of romance.”
