ATHLETICS: She may have been born and raised in Hong Kong, and went to high school and college in the US, but Jackie Areson cannot wait to compete for Australia in the world championships in Moscow.
The 25-year-old, who qualifies to wear the green-and-gold by virtue of her Australian mother, is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and lives in Houston.
After competing for America at last year's world indoor championships, Areson applied to switch her eligibility to the Australian team, earning her place in the 5000m in Moscow with an A qualifier of 15 mins 12.09 secs at a Diamond League meet in Paris last month.
"I don't even know where to begin describing how I got to here," she said.
"I always had this dream of running at an Olympics or something similar, so it is pretty amazing to know that I am getting closer to becoming one of those people living out their fantasies.
"I know people all say this, but I did always want to run for Australia. Even in middle school I was determined to make an Australian team. To now be in the green and gold is awesome."
Areson will compete in the heats of the 5000m tonight.
