Athletes off to state champs

Byron Bay Public School athletes are cheering at the chance to travel to Sydney to compete in the state athletics championships after their success at the regional athletics event in Lismore recently.

With 16 students heading to Sydney in October, school principal Geoff Spargo said it was the largest team the school had ever sent to the state finals.

Three relay teams will compete in the championships including the senior girls team of Gemma Pollock, Alli Reeve, Indy Williams, Nambi Branton and Sian Houston.

Making the dash for the junior girls relay are Tiare Farquhar, Salem Edwards, Zoe Reeve and Misty Davis and for the junior boys relay team, Connor Congdon, Koby Pollack, Brady Fuhrmann and Nicholas Heathecoat.

Competing in individual events are Cavan Harrison and Myles Gibson, as well as Ava Cormack who will compete in the 800-metre running event.

In the lead-up to the finals the students will participate in a statewide raffle in a bid to offset the $1000 cost per student to participate in the trip.
