Artistic collective insanity in Mullumbimby

DONI Raven and the Collective Insanity will be partnering with live painting and projection by abstract artist Hamish Gordon for a special multi-media show this weekend in Mullumbimby.

The show will feature original music by Doni Raven and the Collective Insanity with projections by Lismore artist Hamish Gordon, while he will also paint on canvas during the music performance.

Brunswick resident Doni Raven said the music will be original compositions by the band.

"I write all the material and perform it with the band, which has five members," he said.

"We will be playing for about an hour and 15 minutes.

"Last year, I performed to a silent film that I wrote and directed, but this time it's happening as a less choreographed work."

Doni Raven said artist Hamish Gordon has set up a roll of canvas on the ground and a camera connected to it, linked to a projector screening images to the stage's background, so the audience is able to see the painting being completed while the band plays.

"He paints to the music in time and in the feel of what's going on," he said.

This is the latest performance of a tour that has included past shows in Brisbane, and locally at the Brunswick Picture House and Byron Brewery.

Doni Raven said this style of performing suits him best.

"It's always been my dream to collaborate and put different art forms together," he said.

"For me, a show, specially a music performance, can be more than just the music.,

"Something more visual has more emotion put into it, and more creative buzz about it.

"It's defining what I am singing about and what emotion is being expressed.

"My next idea is to collaborate with a cartoonist in the future."
