Accused murderer Ivan Milat to appeal 43-year jail sentence

THE great-nephew of serial killer Ivan Milat has launched an appeal against the 43-year jail sentence he is serving over the hacking death of teenager David Aucherterlonie.

Matthew Milat, 20, and co-accused Cohan Klein believe they were punished too severely for the cold-blooded murder of their school friend on his 17th birthday in 2010.

Neither will be eligible for parole for at least 30 years.

During their court appearances last year, chilling details were revealed about their victim's final moments in the same dark forest where Milat's notorious relative killed seven tourists in the 90s.

The court heard Milat had taunted 17-year-old David by waving an axe above his head before dealing the deadly blow.

The joint appeals will be heard on December 13.
