Youth workers cruise streets

Street Cruise will begin operation again on the streets of Byron Bay for Schoolies Week.

Starting tomorrow night, youth workers from Byron Youth Service will operate from the rotunda in Railway Park and be doing a circuit around the centre of Byron Bay on Friday and Saturday nights from 8pm till midnight.

Paul Spooner, director of Byron Youth Service (BYS) said the service was thrilled that this valuable community service would operate once more in Byron Bay.

"Many people have been asking for Street Cruise to re- turn including young people and business owners," he said.

"Through the efforts of Byron Shire Council funds have become available from the State Government for BYS to operate Street Cruise over the hotter months when more people are out and about. At this stage we are planning to have youth workers on the streets until April 2005."

On the first night of Street Cruise youth workers will be at the Rotunda in Railway Park to introduce themselves to young people.

Youth workers are keen to hear about how they can be of assistance to any local young people under the age of 18.

Local young DJ's will also be at the rotunda pumping out some music to celebrate the relaunch of Street Cruise.

Street Cruise will be operated by Youth Workers from BYS but will depend on active involvement of volunteers from the community.

A team of volunteers will be required to staff the rotunda while youth workers do the rounds of the street.

Anyone interested in contributing to the initiative can call Paul Spooner on 66857777.
