Vigil for detainees

A Christmas vigil for asylum seekers detained at the Baxter detention centre was held at Byron Bay's Railway park last Friday.

It was organised by the Byron Bay Rural Australians for Refugees group to highlight the plight of about 200 asylum seekers held at the South Australian centre.

For some of the refugees it will be their fourth or fifth Christmas in detention.

Twenty-five Iranian asylum seekers have recently begun a hunger strike to try and raise public awareness of their years in detention and the dangers they face if deported to Iran.

Pam Ditton from Byron Bay RAR, who has visited detainees at Baxter, said she couldn't ignore their plight while surrounded by preparations for Christmas which should be a time of peace and goodwil towards all.
