Idols? do it for Marty

Students from Byron Bay High School showed off their talents at a special 'Idol' contest last week held to raise money for a former student.

Marty Mayberry, who has just completed his Higher School Certificate, is trying to gain selection in the Australian Paralympic team for the 2006 winter Paralympics.

He had both legs amputated below the knee two years ago after contracting meningococcal disease.

Next month Marty leaves for America and Europe where he will attend a 10-week intensive training camp.

"I am really excited about going overseas and the support I have received from the local community is fantastic," he said.

The 'Idol' contest raised $700.
