Girls go close

Byron Bay lost an exciting women's hockey grand final to Ballina at Goonellabah last Thursday night after the game went into extra time. Byron Bay had the majority possession in the first half but were unable to score. Their attack was strong in the first 15 minutes of the game then the defence took over keeping Ballina at bay and scoreless. Strong marking in the second half saw the full time score at nil-all. 10 minutes extra time was played with two players taken from each team, going from 11 players to 9 and a further 10 minutes with seven players on each side. With five minutes to play Ballina scored and took the title. After 85 minutes of fast hockey Byron Bay walked away as minor premiers and comp leaders for the year and can be very proud of themselves for this achievement. Presentation is on October 23 at the Park Hotel. For details contact Jude 66 853243.
