Eyes on Indian dancing

BOLLYWOOD has arrived in Byron Bay!

Women dressed in vibrant fabrics move their bodies sensually, taking to the latest craze to hit the coast - Bollywood dance.

With a strong background in belly dancing, yoga and Latin dance, 69-year-old dance teacher Premala Devi struts and bends every week at the Byron Bay Community Centre, coaching her students in the modern Indian art.

"It's a mixture of Middle Eastern, Indian and disco dance," Premala said.

"You have to train the eyes to move in a particular way and hand gestures are important."

Megan Young, of Byron Bay, was there for her first class and left elated.

"I had a ball. It's playful and flirty and very expressive," Megan said.

"You just have to relax and let go - anyone can learn it," Premala added.
