Dutch tutor praises Emma?s dedication

Byron Bay High School's Emma Hoette who topped the State in the Dutch Continuers course in this year's HSC, is pictured with Florence Flana- gan (Drese), the tutor who helped her achieve the result. Without a Dutch teacher, once a week, Emma would go to Lennox Head to Florence's home for tutoring and every now and again, Florence would drive to Byron Bay to tutor Emma at the high school. Emma had spent a year in Holland two years ago and had a good grounding in the language. "I had to fill in the weaknesses and brush it up," said Florence, who is not a teacher, but a quali- fied translator. "She was very dedicated. She is amazing." Four years ago, Emma's older sister Ruby, also tutored by Florence, got a UAI score of 93.7 for the same subject.
