Bid to save beached whale fails

The best efforts of rescuers failed to save a melon-headed whale which beached itself at New Brighton last Friday.

Whale rescue experts worked for about six hours to save the 2.6 metre elderly female whale, but it died while being transported to the Brunswick River.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service said an autopsy revealed a very heavy parasite infestation.
