Man 'takes machete' to Centrelink

A MAN allegedly armed himself after a dispute turned ugly at Centrelink in Coffs Harbour.

Police allege the 20-year-old entered the customer service centre in Duke Street at 11.10am on Wednesday and demanded additional payments.

He allegedly became irate when staff refused his request and he allegedly threatened them.

The man then insisted staff call the police.

The man left the building, but returned about an hour later when he allegedly continued his threats against staff.

Police say he stormed outside, went to his car and allegedly pulled out a baseball bat and a machete.

Bystanders have told police he allegedly waved the machete in the air near his car. All of a sudden he jumped in his sedan and drove off.

Police found the man driving in nearby Coff Street and pulled him over.

Officers arrested him at the scene and took him to Coffs Harbour police station where he was subsequently charged with two counts of intimidation and one count of wielding a knife in public.

Police refused the man bail to face Coffs Harbour Local Court yesterday.
