Amazing finale for Byron hockey team

WHAT hat an amazing finale to an magnificent season with the major and minor premiers.

With consistent effort throughout the season, Byron Bay Hockey Club's C Grade Women's team was able to capture the minor premiership.

This is a true token to the dedication of not only the players, but also the two wonderful coaches - Judy Keenan and Sheryl Ryan - and all supporters.

Having lost the semi-final to Coraki, who then immediately progressed to the grand final, Byron Bay battled Lismore's Northern Star last week in a nerve-racking game and progressed to face Coraki once more.

On Saturday both Byron Bay and Coraki fielded strong sides, however, hot conditions and a lack of substitutes left Coraki the worse for wear.

Play was equally shared for most of the first half until Byron broke free with a goal by Anna Compton, leaving the score 1-0 at half-time.

After encouraging words from coaches and supporters alike, Byron dominated in the second half with Susan Yeung deflecting a brilliant hit by Jodie Keenan in behind the goalie, then scored again after a great pass by Sharon Wasley on the wing.

Jodie followed with a flick into the goal.

The game was decided in Byron's favour and with only 15 minutes of play left the Byron girls were confident of a 4-0 win, and this was delivered.

Special congratulations to Lee Baker, with an injured knee, and Sharon Wasley, with a stomach bug, for playing and supporting their team - it was great to have you out there.

Coraki however, were not downbeat and fought hard until the end.

They continually attacked Byron's defence as much as possible but were hardly able to penetrate the goal circle thanks to the work of the backs - Erin Kelly, Bev Rose and Gerry Savins.

Goalie Cath Russo blocked everything that flew at her, gaining great acclamation from the avid supporters.

The halves - Dale Viola, Vanessa McNeill and Sharon Rooney - along with Taya Van Haren and Anna Compton as inners, maintained their steady hold on the game as they have all season, dictating play in both attack and defence.

Their intercepts stopped numerous Coraki attacks as they continually forced Byron up into the attacking half, feeding the ball through to the forwards.

Celebrations were of course held, and many thanks to Andrew and Nikki Sheridan at The Park Hotel for their sponsorship.

Every single Byron player should be exceedingly proud of their efforts in the grand final match and the entire season,.

Thanks on behalf of the team for the effort and time manifested in the team and Byron Bay Hockey Club by the coaches, families and supporters.

Our turf team did very well this year, having played a higher grade in A Reserve.

With a mix of old and new players from the UK, Canada and various States of Australia, it brought an interesting mix of players to the club.

A big thank you to Janelle Voss for being coach and Mark Tidswell for use of his tennis court to train on.
