Alleged drug addict accused of poisoning hubby with ‘ice’

A GOONELLABAH woman charged with attempted murder over the alleged poisoning of her husband with the drug ice is free on bail after promising not to "try it again".

Police allege on December 14 last year, at their Highland Cres home, Elise Lewis, 36, tried to murder Robert Lewis by spiking his drinks with ice, also known as crystal methamphetamine.

When Lewis was arrested on January 25 at her Goonellabah home, police allege she made admissions about attempting to poison her husband.

On Australia Day when Lewis appeared at Lismore Local Court and applied for bail she allegedly claimed she was an ice addict and "she loved her husband and wouldn't try it again".

Bail was again refused.

The following day she appeared before Magistrate David Heilpern at Lismore Local Court and he ordered a psychiatric assessment to be prepared by Justice Health on Lewis.

On Tuesday, Lewis appeared at Lismore Local Court via video-link to answer the charge of cause poison to be taken with intent to murder.

Her solicitor Tracey Randall did not enter a plea on behalf of her client, but applied for bail.

Ms Randall said Lewis' father Winston Sami could lodge $1000 as surety; she could reside with her father at the northern Toowoomba suburb of Highfields and report to police.

Prosecutor Mr Heffernan opposed bail citing the need for protection for the alleged victim.

When Magistrate David Heilpern indicated he was considering granting bail, Mr Heffernan asked for the case to be held over until he could speak to the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions.

After a phone conversation with Director Lloyd Babb SC, who consented to Lewis being granted conditional bail, the case continued.

Mr Heilpern granted Lewis bail to reside at Highfields with her father and ordered her to report to police every Thursday.

He ordered her not to contact her husband, to report to the Toowoomba Acute Care Service within 48 hours and to follow any treatment recommended.

Mr Heilpern adjourned her matters until April.
