Albanese lashes Bernardi claim on abortion 'birth control'

THE Federal Opposition has hit out at a right-wing Liberal Senator's comments that some Australian women were using abortion for birth control.

South Australian Senator Cory Bernardi made the comments in his latest book, The Conservative Revolution, in which the religious politician hits out at what he calls a "death industry".

Sen Bernardi wrote in the book that some were using abortion as an "abhorrent form of birth control", lamenting the "horrendous and unacceptable" number of abortions in Australia.

He wrote that up to 100,000 abortions were completed each year in Australia, despite official Medicare figures showing the number was closer to 60,000.

Sen Bernardi, previously a personal parliamentary secretary to Tony Abbott when he was Opposition Leader, told ABC News on Monday he believed it was time for government to investigate ways to lower the number of abortions in Australia.

Opposition frontbencher Anthony Albanese labelled his comments an "offensive" contribution to the national debate, telling reporters Sen Bernardi said he was pro-freedom, but against a women's right to choose.

"He says he's pro-family, but he's against any family that doesn't resemble his depiction of what a family is," Mr Albanese said on Monday.

The Opposition has called on Prime Minister Abbott to publicly distance the government from Sen Bernardi's comments.

In 2012 Sen Bernardi lost his plum role as parliamentary secretary to the Opposition Leader after he made a speech equating gay marriage to acceptance of bestiality.
