Aged care work placement tests would-be nurse Emma

WORKING with dementia patients, playing games and assisting registered nurses.

These were some of Mercy College student Emma Carroll's daily tasks during a recent week of work experience.

Emma, who wants to be a nurse, chose to spend her time at the Blue Care Homefield Aged Care Facility.

The 14-year-old student said she was interested in eventually becoming a midwife.

"It's been really interesting to find out how the job works and if I'm actually interested in the occupation or not," Emma said.

During her hands-on week of work, she was asked to help feed residents, re-position them in their beds and to help them with activities.

She said it had been easy to work with the elderly and she particularly had enjoyed working with residents who had dementia.

While she admitted the cleaning jobs were not her favourite, she said she had enjoyed her experience.

At the aged-care facility, she had the opportunity to work with other registered nurses and enlisted nurses as well as personal carers, who have a TAFE certificate.

Emma said after completing the week of work she was still interested in nursing as a career but was looking forward to getting back to the classroom.

"Even though it was a good experience I'm ready to go back to school," she said

More than 150 Mercy College students were offered work experience placements with businesses and organisations across Mackay.
