Adoptive mum rejects baby with health condition

WHEN a woman who describes herself as "basically homeless" fell pregnant she decided the best thing she could do for her unborn baby would be to adopt her out.

By the time Christina Fisher's little girl Abigail Lynn was born, she had been matched with a suitable couple through an agency. But everything changed the moment the adoptive mother set eyes on Abigail.

In the months leading up to the birth, Christina, 36, from Florida, exchanged ultrasound images and updates with her baby's adoptive-parents-to-be.

Closer to her due date, the adoptive parents travelled from their home state of Georgia, and stayed near Christina until the baby was born four days later.

Baby Abigail was born with a rare condition called Treacher Collins Syndrome, which affects the development of a the facial bones and tissues.

The condition hadn't shown up in the prenatal scans. "Nothing was detected," Christina told the Telegraph. "They just told me her ears looked a little small."

When the adoptive parents heard the news, they disappeared shortly after.

"I let her (the adoptive mother) take the other wristband into the NICU," Christina said. "She came out crying ... and left the hospital. We never heard from them again."

But baby Abigail had already won someone's heart. Christina was smitten with her baby girl, and the pair are going to stick together. "I can't imagine my life without her," she said.

As for the couple who had signed on to adopt Abigail, the adoption agency was reportedly "appalled" by their reaction and has apparently flagged the family in their system.
