’Horrible’ baby name splits parents

WHILE the names Olivia and Noah have topped this year's baby name leaderboard, it seems they may be a bit too average for this couple.

One excited mum-to-be took to Reddit asking for people's opinion on whether she should name her girl Vesper, asking if the name was prone to "ageing poorly".

The unusual choice attracted a lot of comments, who had something to say on the far from mainstream option.

"I think vesper is lovely. Vesper Vernon sounds like a superhero!" one person said, referring to the surname of the woman's fiance.

Another added that while it wouldn't be their "first choice" they agreed it had a superhero ring to it. but I'm not you.

"It's like Clark Kent, Bruce Banner, Peter Parker," another added

The mum-to-be explained their choice was down to their mixed heritages - she's half Dutch and American, and he's half Indonesian and Dutch - so they needed a name that sounded good in their respective languages.

"Many of the traditional English names I love are no-goes for this reason, because they sound beautiful in one language and awful in another," she explained, revealing the name means evening star in Dutch.

"It has a special meaning to us due to an old family story, and we love how it sounds."

But, while some loved it, others weren't so keen, comparing it to a Vespa scooter. One person even branded it "horrible".

Others said it reminded them of the fictional character Vesper Lynd in James Bond’s Casino Royale film.

"First, it's pretty modern. It's the name of the Roman demigod of the evening star, but it was only brought into modern use in the last 20 years due James Bond character Vesper Lynd, so I'm worried it might age poorly.

"Another factor to consider is that my partner's last name begins with a V. If she gets only his name, she'll be Vesper Vernon. Is this too much? If she takes both our names, she'd be Vesper Walker Vernon."

But for other people, that was their least concern with many revealing all the different meanings it had in their language.

"Too close to vespa meaning wasp in Italian," one woman said, while another added: "In German, colloquially, Vesper means a late afternoon snack or dinner. I realise, you can't mind every translation in every language, but since German is pretty close to Dutch, is there maybe a similar meaning in Dutch?"

It has attracted a lot of attention and is still going.

The woman seemed shocked when one person informed her it is a brand for a vape pen.

"Oh wow, this is really good to know! Thank you," she responded.

"Google tells me it's also a cocktail," another told her. "I don't think you're going to get a name that fits all the cultural needs, unless you go for a name like Mary or Jane and find the equivalent."

The woman seemed grateful for the comments, even responding to most of them, and while she didn't reveal if she'll settle for the name, she did say her backups were more "traditional" names of Hannah, Philippa (Pip) and Caroline.
