A good day for home stars on court in Brisbane

AUSSIE world No. 61 Marinko Matosevic earned a second round match-up against American Sam Querrey after beating Frenchman Julien Benneteau 5-7 6-4 7-6 in the Brisbane International yesterday.

The victory was the first for Matosevic (pictured) in a top-tier event in Australia at his 10th attempt.

He almost threw it away, however. After serving for the match at 5-4 in the final set, he was broken to love before recovering to take the contest to a tie-breaker which he won 7-4.

Wildcard James Duckworth wasn't so lucky, the Aussie beaten 6-2 6-3 by Finland's Jarkko Nieminen.

Victorian teenager Thanasi Kokkinakis earned a place in the main draw after beating China's Di Wu in the final round of qualifying.

In the women's draw, Casey Dellacqua beat Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva 3-6 6-2 6-3, while Australian countrywoman Ashleigh Barty downed Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 6-3 7-5.
