A different Melbourne cup ride home

IF YOU'VE lost your fascinator, your heels are killing you and you just want to go home but you'll need to drive yourself to work on Wednesday, there's a new option for you.

We Drive Australia launched in Mackay more than three weeks ago driver Robert Scource signed up.

The 67-year-old is one of the company's six Mackay drivers who offer a service similar to Dial a Driver which operated in Mackay sporadically but is no longer around, where someone drives you home in your car.

"It is a safety thing for people who have been drinking," Mr Scource said.

For him it is a chance to save money so he and his partner can continue travelling around Australia.

For the punters, it will cost $30 for the first 5km and then a constant kilometre rate from then on and when they wake up their car will be in their driveway saving them another taxi fare to get their car.

We Drive Australia founder and owner Yan Flageul said he wanted it to be set up in every regional city anyway.

"I started the business in Melbourne in 2009 after the loss of a very good friend who was killed by a drink-driver," he said.

"Last year I had serious thoughts on expanding nationally and I am following my dream to have a driver to get people home safe and get dangerous people off the road.

"From a commercial point of view the big cities will be where we make the money but the purpose is to have this service in every regional town."

As for We Drive Austalia's impact on Mackay-Whitsunday Taxis, Mr Flajeul said his business offered a different service.

However, Gerry Lucas, the manager of the taxi service, which has been in the region since the 70s, said it was bad for his business when another competitor came into the market.

"The cake is only so big and the pieces just get smaller the more people who want some," he said.

"But in my time there has been about three people try and start this business up here and they have all ended up leaving."
