Ward moves to GWS

THE Western Bulldogs' Callan Ward has announced he's jumping ship to new AFL franchise Greater Western Sydney Giants for next season.

The 21-year-old midfielder's decision was met with shock within the club, but is being hailed as a major boon in the western suburbs of Sydney.

Western Bulldogs Chief Executive Simon Garlick said the club worked hard to keep Ward's signature on its books.

"We have done everything we responsibly could to keep Callan at the Western Bulldogs," Garlick said.

"While it's disappointing that Callan has made this decision, we will be looking to ensure we receive appropriate compensation to enable us to continue to build on our solid core of experienced players and exciting pool of young talent."

Giants CEO Dale Holmes offered his condolences to the Bulldogs but admitted the club would do everything in its power to attract the cream of the crop.

"We understand the disappointment that the Western Bulldogs and its supporters will experience at this announcement," he said.

"However we have a responsibility to our members and supporters to do everything we can to attract the best talent available and build a strong AFL club for the future."
