Palmer and Mirabella still in the air as counts undecided

RESULTS in the federal seats of Indi and Fairfax are unlikely to be known until next week as the margins in both electorates narrowed on Friday.

Independent Cathy McGowan began Friday with a more than 1000-vote lead over the Liberal Party's Sophie Mirabella, who ruled herself out of contention for a frontbench position on Thursday due to the closeness of the count in Indi.

But as of 4pm that buffer had been reduced to 793 votes, 87% counted.

It was a similar story in Fairfax, where Palmer United Party leader Clive Palmer's lead over the LNP's Ted O'Brien had been whittled down to 718 votes with 85% counted.

A recount is now almost certain in both seats.

It came on a day when Labor conceded defeat in two close seats - Capricornia and Eden Monaro, which retains its status as the nation's Bellwether seat.
