PM denies leaked ISIS attack report, calling it 'fanciful'

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott says a leaked report saying he wanted to send 3500 Australian troops to invade Iraq was "absolutely fanciful".

The Weekend Australian reported that Mr Abbott pitched the idea at a meeting last year as a way for Australia to combat the Islamic State terrorist group alone. But Mr Abbott said the story was false.

"I've spoken to the Chief of the Defence Force about it and he is as mystified by this as I am," he said.

"We have lots of discussions about lots of things all the time, but the idea that I would propose a unilateral dispatch of a large Australian force to another country is just fanciful - simply fanciful."
