Modern uni students making a difference in the world

UNIVERSITY education in the past few decades has usually involved immersion in another culture.

But the shift now has been away from traditional European escapes or other Western culture adventures to helping others.

CQ University vice chancellor Scott Bowman said his students had little interest in heading to Paris for a semester but would queue to volunteer in India and Nepal.

He said nursing students were lining up to run clinics in Nepal but conversely international students at the university's capital city campuses wanted to help homeless people in Sydney and help address Australia's social problems.

"Young people want to make a difference and if we can link overseas exchange with actually doing good in those countries that would be great," he said during the Regional Universities Network Conference on the Gold Coast.
