Lampooned "Knights and Dames" policy looks to be scrapped
FORMER prime minister Tony Abbott's decision to reinstate the controversial "Knights and Dames" program could be reversed under Malcolm Turnbull.
Mr Turnbull was reported in the Sunday Telegraph as considering ditching the much-maligned program.
It follows Mr Abbott on Australia Day this year awarding a knighthood to Prince Philip, one of several key issues that led to him narrowly avoiding a leadership spill in February.
Government backbenchers had long complained about Mr Abbott's reinstatement of the awards, before his announcement over-shadowed Australia Day celebrations this year.
Existing recipients, including Prince Philip, Governor-General Peter Cosgrove and his predecessor Quentin Bryce, would retain their titles.
