Hunger Games grosses $135 million in its first weekend

HUNGER Games fans are flocking to cinemas in record numbers to take in the long-awaited sequel Catching Fire.

Since its worldwide release on Friday, the film has already grossed $135 million - $70.5 million in the US domestic market alone - in ticket sales and is expected to overtake reigning hit Thor: The Dark World by the end of this week.

According to News.com, a spokesperson for Lionsgate Studio released the early numbers on Sunday and believed the total sales could reach $150 million domestically by the end of the weekend.

The film adaptations of the highly popular book series star Silver Linings Playbook actress Jennifer Lawrence.
