Governor-General releases mental health guide for gay youths

AFTER revealing publicly her support for gay marriage in recent days, Governor-General Quentin Bryce launched a guide to help young gay Australians deal with mental health issues on Tuesday.

Ms Bryce came under fire in recent days after voicing her support for marriage equality, and an Australian republic, during the prestigious Boyer Lecture last week.

On Tuesday, Ms Bryce was in Melbourne to launch a new guide endorsed by beyondblue to help young gay people suffering stress in dealing with their sexuality.

The guide, Families Like Mine, comes after ABS research found gay and bisexual people were more than 14 times more likely to attempt suicide, and three times as likely as straight Australians to develop depression.

Ms Bryce said the guide would help families provide a more inclusive environment for such young people.

"This guide will help families understand the impact discrimination can have and underline the importance of acceptance," she said.

"It is tragic that they are at higher risk of mental illness and suicide. However, this guide will boost their wellbeing and help save their lives by ensuring they receive as much support as possible from their families."

Beyondblue chairman Jeff Kennett said the guide would help families of young people who have recently "come out", and help fight discrimination and myths around sexuality.

The guide is available for free at http://www.beyondblue.org.au
