Evacuation warnings for two fires on NSW North Coast

EVACUATION warnings were in place for two major fires burning on the NSW north coast as the state continued to swelter on Sunday.

Total fire bans were declared across eight regions including Sydney, the Greater Hunter and the North Coast.

Near Port Stephens, two fires - one in the Tilligerry conservation area and another at Fingal Bay, were threatening nearby properties.

Residents were advised to seek shelter after both fires jumped containment lines and strong winds were fanning embers for up to 6km around the perimeters.

A watch and act warning was also in place for a fire burning between Bicentenary Rd and Riverside Drive at Webbs Ck, on the Hawkesbury River.

More than 800 fire-fighters were battling blazes across Sydney, the Clarence Valley and Coffs Harbour.

A cool change was expected to help with the fire-fighting effort on Sunday night, with temperatures expected to drop back to the early 20s by Monday morning.
