Drug offences in NSW schools hit 11-year high

DRUG offences in NSW schools have hit an 11-year high and more than doubled since 2008, with police involved in an average of one incident per day last year.

New Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research figures reveal police dealt with 377 incidents at schools in 2014, 90% of which were during school hours.

More than three-quarters of offences were for possession of marijuana - a trend in keeping with the state's 17% increase in possession charges between 2013 and 2014.

Police handled just 168 drug offences on NSW school grounds in 2008.
