Truck crash claims life of Toowoomba motoring identity

WORK colleagues of Toowoomba truck driver Athol Jacobsen, 55, have been offered counselling as they try to come to terms with his tragic crash death.

His friends have also paid tribute to Mr Jacobsen as a well-liked identity in the drag racing community on the Darling Downs and further afield.

Police said it appeared the Transpacific Industries truck which Mr Jacobsen was driving had failed to negotiate a bend on Beelbee Rd at Beelbee, on the Western Downs, about 3.30pm Monday.

An officer said the prime mover, which was hauling a load of washdown water, collided with trees before rolling.

Mr Jacobsen died at the scene.

His friend Darren Otto, who had been a part of his modified drag racing crew, said Mr Jacobsen would be sorely missed in the quarter mile community from Sydney to Mackay.

"It is all a bit devastating at the moment," Mr Otto said.

Mr Jacobsen's former business partner Trevor Mitchell said he was shocked to hear his friend's sudden death.

"If you were stuck he would always give you a hand," Mr Mitchell said.

A Transpacific Industries spokeswoman said the company's thoughts and deepest sympathies were with the family, friends and colleagues of Mr Jacobsen.

She said the company was cooperating with police investigators and safety regulators had been notified.
