Cyclone hits India leaving half a million people displaced

THE wildest cyclone to hit India since a 1999 storm which claimed 8000 lives, has left more than half a million people displaced.

Winds of up to 240km/hr and rough seas hit the coastal states of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa early Sunday.

Unlike the 1999 cyclone, authorities had almost a week to prepare and evacuations began two days before the storm hit.

On Sunday night, no deaths had been reported but in the coming days evacuated residents will be left to survey the kind of damage a storm of that magnitude may have done to some of the nation's most impoverished villages.
