Court of Justice to decide the future of whaling today

WHALING in the Antarctic could be outlawed today as Australia and Japan front the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Australia is pushing the ICJ to order Japan to stop its research program and cancel any approvals it has to hunt whales in the Southern Ocean.

A win for Australia would force Japan to cancel its hunting, leaving it with no way to appeal.

A Japanese win would change nothing.

The annual hunt by Japanese through its Institute of Cetacean Research is often confronted by anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd which reports it has saved 750 whales.
